Artist q+A
Imagine: there has been some kind of government censorship on music and you’re only allowed to listen to five albums on repeat for the rest of your life. What albums are you taking with you until your dying moment?
This is so difficult for me as I love way too many albums/genres, but I think I am gonna go with whatever is on the top of my head in this moment! Sza- Ctrl is a staple of mine since it was first released and it still hits! Adam Melchor - Here Goes Nothing! is genuinely one of the most perfect albums and a big inspiration for my own music. Motel Radio - Siesta Del Sol is another album that I have had on repeat since I first heard it. Alvvays - Blue Rev incredible album and incredible band. Muna - MUNA just has queer banger after banger I am so grateful to live in the same timeline as this band. Honorable mention would of course be Lucy or Phoebe but I cannot afford to be sad lol.
Bob Dylan famously said, about writing his music, that it “isn’t him” — something else took over entirely, like a trance, and when he snapped out of it, he had some of the most lyrically profound music in front of him; music that he had trouble taking credit for. What does songwriting look like to you? Is it reaching a transcendent flow-state, or is it a way simpler process?
For me, songwriting comes at me when I am feeling a big emotion that I need to just express. Typically I feel most inspired after live shows, heartbreaks, crushes, friendgroup convos, etc. It just reaches a flow and I can typically finish a song in one/two sittings. The thing about my music is that it is very much me. It’s my thoughts, my feelings, my emotions; which can all be very vulnerable to write and share. I also, like so many artists, have a huge notes app on my phone filled with lyrics and voice memos with melodies.
Do other art mediums (i.e. painting, sculpture, film) inform how and why you make music? Who are some of your favorite artists outside of the art form of music?
All art is connected in my mind. Anytime I watch a movie or go to an art gallery, I am so inspired to write from the perspective of what I just saw (maybe I should do that more). I love seeing the connection between art forms. An exhibit I think about often is the Alvin Ailey pop-up exhibit at the Whitney. That was genuinely such a moving exhibition that tied in art, dance, music, costumes, makeup, etc and I left there feeling so inspired and in awe by it all. I am also always motivated by local artists. The artist who drew my merch/poster, Nina Zhou, is genuinely such a fabulous watercolor artist and it moved me the way she created her piece by listening to my song and creating her art. It tied the two art forms so perfectly together.
Is there someone in particular that has greatly inspired your current music taste? How have you carried this into your artistic expression?
Woah. Okay so on the launch, we must listen to Easy on your Own? By Alvvays. It’s the most perfect song for that feeling of launching into space. Followed by Ana De Armas by The Thing for that launch feeling. Cowboy by Kid Bloom as we see all the stars and orbit around. Also on rotation during orbit/flight has to be Full Grown by Field Medic, Brooklyn Bridge by Twen, cherrycola by Devon Again, and Like the Sun by Tanukichan. As we land, my comfort song cause I have a little fear of flying, Angeline by Rayland Baxter. That song truly soothes me on the landing. I could probably go on for hours listing more songs and artists that we have to listen to. Maybe I'll make a little Paper Moon Playlist.
