Imagine: there has been some kind of government censorship on music and you’re only allowed to listen to five albums on repeat for the rest of your life. What albums are you taking with you until your dying moment?

Oof this is hard.

A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out - Panic! At The Disco

Planet Her - Doja Cat

Ultraviolence (Deluxe) - Lana Del Rey

ANTI - Rihanna

I Love You. - The Neighbourhood

Bob Dylan famously said, about writing his music, that it “isn’t him” — something else took over entirely, like a trance, and when he snapped out of it, he had some of the most lyrically profound music in front of him; music that he had trouble taking credit for. What does songwriting look like to you? Is it reaching a transcendent flow-state, or is it a way simpler process?

A lot of my songwriting comes from a deeply emotional place while my ability to find melody is almost completely random. I’ll be struck by random melodies in the midst of the chaos of a show, or in the middle of the night when I wake up to use the bathroom. I always have to record those immediately in my voice notes app or I’ll forget it. Whereas lyrics come from a much more intentional place and almost get drawn out of me by how intensely I feel about something to the point where I just have to write about it. Combining the two has been the most challenging aspect, it’s both complicating the little tunes I hear into something meaningful while also taking the extremely complex words that come with my emotions and trying to package it into something relatable and concise. I’m not always in control of when or how that happens. I do know when it’s happened, though, and I think that’s the flow state.

Do other art mediums (i.e. painting, sculpture, film) inform how and why you make music? Who are some of your favorite artists outside of the art form of music?

I consider myself an all around artist which means pretty much anything having to do with the creative form I either enjoy or have dabbled in or will dabble in at some point. I’m varying levels of talented at all of them. I more so will see a vision of something creative in my head and think about how to best express that creatively - will this inspiration I have be best seen through a drawing, or a song, or a short film, or a photo? As a musician I think being able to tap into all different art forms inherently supports your music. Right now, I’m really admiring photographers. I know so many cool photographers in the music scene and I’m trying to develop a personal photography style myself, so I always love seeing people’s different styles. One person who is really blowing up right now and I think it’s well deserved is my friend Suchi (@suchi__mane).

Is there someone in particular that has greatly inspired your current music taste? How have you carried this into your artistic expression?

My mom definitely was a huge factor in my taste growing up, she was really into 80s and 90s grunge and synth pop which I personally love and try to incorporate into my sound and personal style. She also put me on to a lot of classic RNB and hip hop, so I think my taste is really well rounded.

You’ve been assigned aux for the spaceship ride to Paper Moon. What are you playing?

Hmm what’s the vibe? I mean if I gotta get into a spacey mood I probably wanna some ethereal type vibe going on... but also, reggaeton? Okay. Gasolina during the blast off, Space Oddity by David Bowie once we’re in space, and Resonance by Home once we’re about to land.
